Chapter 8

Simon nervously paced back and forth in front of the window that looked out over the path Ares and Djal had taken toward the house his brother shared with a few of the other single shifters. He became more anxious by the minute as his dismay grew, his fingers twisting together until they hurt.

He drew in a deep breath to calm his nerves, but it did no good. He still felt like he was going to puke. Ares was out there somewhere trying to find Adam. And Adam was out there somewhere doing god knew what.

Both of the people that meant the most to Simon in the world could be in danger, possibly even dying right now, and he just stood there like a bump on a log, waiting.

He was a coward.

There was no other explanation for his behavior. If he had one single ounce of courage, he would be out there standing beside his mate instead of being inside the alpha house, hiding from danger.

Simon couldn’t stand it. He started for the front door at a hurried pace. The thought of Ares getting hurt was so nerve racking that Simon felt like he was coming apart at the seams. He needed to be with his mate.

“Don’t even think about it.”

Simon growled angrily as he swung around to confront the voice behind him, preventing him from going to his mate. He quickly lowered his eyes when he found Iben standing behind him, arms crossed.

“Alpha Iben, I need to—”

“You need to stay here where Ares knows you will be safe.”

“But—”

There was compassion in Iben’s dark eyes as he slowly walked closer. “Simon, are you trained to fight?”

“No, but only because no one will teach me.” And that angered Simon almost more than being prevented from going to Ares. “I could fight just as well as anyone else if I had the right training. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to help protect the pack.”

“That is probably true, but as of this moment, you are not trained to fight. If you go out that door and find Ares, you will split his attention from what he needs to do in order to keep this pack safe and what he needs to do to keep you safe.” Iben’s eyes narrowed, which should have been a warning. “Is that what you want, Simon?”

“No, but…” How did he explain this without sounding like a total idiot? “I want to be able to help Ares. I know I will never be a fighter like he is, but that doesn’t mean I can’t help in some way.”

Alpha Iben clasped his hands together, looking calm like they were merely discussing the weather rather than life-and-death issues. “And you can help, Simon. You just need to help here, where you’re safe.”

It took every ounce of Simon’s control not to roll his eyes as his alpha. Besides the fact that it was rude, such a gesture would probably get him into more trouble than he was capable of getting out of.
